Loch Aerie Mansion, located in Chester County, Pennsylvania, has a captivating history that continues to enchant couples since its grand opening as a stunning wedding venue in 2018. This three-story French Gothic-style structure features intricate detailing, a distinctive tower, and a spacious elegant interior with vintage finishes. But before we immerse ourselves in the splendor of its glowing halls and grand rooms, let us embark on a journey back in time to uncover the origins and enduring legacy of this cherished historical landmark. Loch Aerie Mansion was designed by renowned architect Addison Hutton and completed in 1865 for William E Lockwood. Lockwood, a Philadelphia businessman, amassed his wealth through linen-based disposable cuffs and collars for men's shirts. The mansion, made of Pennsylvania Blue Marble and Limestone, spanned 6,552 square feet across four stories. Originally from Ashtabula, Ohio, Lockwood relocated to Philadelphia in the 1850s and partnered with his stepfather, Elon Dunbar, in business. Lockwood held numerous patents during his career, but his success was largely attributed to his innovative linen paper shirt collars. In 1863, he purchased 212 acres of land in Chester County from his stepfather, expanding his country estate over time to include an additional 472 acres in East and West Whiteland Townships. Construction of the mansion, originally known as "Glenloch," commenced in mid-1865 under the supervision of West Chester Stone Mason William A. Stephenson. The mansion featured exquisite details, including intricately-carved moldings, marble and slate fireplaces, verandas, eight bedrooms, a summer kitchen, and a lookout tower. Notably, it had running water supplied by gravity-fed underground piping connected to a nearby hilltop pond. The pipe pressure powered a 900-gallon holding tank on the third floor of the tower, capable of providing running water to multiple rooms in the house, with a daily capacity of up to 12,000 gallons. Over the years, Loch Aerie Mansion changed hands several times until it found new owners in Steven and Dana Poirier, who purchased the property in 2016. Steven and Dana launched into an extensive restoration project, reviving the venue's original splendor and even expanding the estate to include a magnificent 5,000 square foot ballroom capable of accommodating over 300 guests. The renovation of the original home was masterfully executed by Frank Trusila, while the glamorous ballroom addition, in harmony with the mansion's architectural style, was designed by Ted Mondzelewski of Architectural Concepts, based in Exton, PA. Segel Nicol, whose children graduated from The Agnes Irwin School and The Haverford School, knows all about what prom planning entails, as she participated in many of them. What does prom mean to you? To Nicol, prom signifies “the end of childhood and the beginning of a well-deserved future,” one that all prom-goers have been looking forward to for a long time. Nicol describes prom as “an event where students come together to celebrate their future plans and most cherished memories among childhood friends, some of which have shared a classroom with them for over a decade.” Through her experience organizing and hosting prom-related events, Nicol has found that prom is just as anticipated by the adults as it is by the students. Though it may not be the end of an era yet—that would be graduation, as we all know—prom night is certainly “a wake up call to students and their families to enjoy every moment in the busy months leading up to their graduation.” High school isn’t easy, especially in the day and age we’re living in. Let’s be honest. The real focal point of prom night is and always will be… the dress. “Helping my daughters decide on their favorite dresses made me realize just how fast my little girls were slipping away,” says Nicol, “and that I had to enjoy every moment with them while I still had them at home.” “What is so special about this part of the process is that it’s entirely their decision—their taste—and even though every parent offers their opinions, it’s likely one of the final times [in your child’s adolescent life] that you will have the opportunity to accompany them as they pick out an outfit for a formal occasion.” Nicol Floral Design flower wall “PAULA,” Sign by EVER LASER, Photography by RACHEL McGINN “My daughter and most of her friends had their hair and makeup done professionally,” explains Nicol. “It was a special treat for a special day, and these exciting, little details meant so much to them.” “Fresh flowers are a must,” Nicol says of the floral bouquets that the girls held in their prom photos. “Every girl in my daughter’s friend group had a gorgeous bouquet, handcrafted by local florists, that coordinated with their individual dresses. Nicol discusses one of her daughters’ prom nights that she remembers best, an evening that began with a buoyant gathering at the Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne, PA. “Everyone got ready separately at their homes, then we headed to a local country club that one of the girls’ parents were members of. There were hors d’oeuvres and mocktails served. We even hired a photographer to take professional pictures. From there, parents drove their kids to the school where a bus was waiting to take the girls to the location where prom was held.” Nicol Floral Design flower wall “CHEYENNE,” Photography by RACHEL McGINN What accessories are traditionally worn by high schoolers at prom? “High school students can wear a range of accessories that add a touch of glamor to their formal attire,” says Nicol. “Some popular accessories for girls are jewelry and small handbags or clutches to hold essentials. Most of the girls at my daughters’ proms borrowed designer clutches from their moms. For boys, common accessories include ties, bow ties, and cufflinks. Some of the boys at my son’s school wore tuxedos, and a few wore Casablanca-style, white dinner jackets that were very elegant.” Prom dress codes vary depending on the school, so it’s always a good idea to check the guidelines before attending. Corsages traditionally symbolize good luck, and “can be displayed in many different forms, the most common being a small bouquet of flowers on a woman’s wrist.” Though “it is tradition for men to supply the corsages for their dates and for women to bring the boutonnieres,” Nicol has seen different versions of this. “This is a great opportunity for prom couples to coordinate,” she adds. After a long, cold winter, the arrival of spring brings a sense of hope and optimism as nature springs back to life. Segel, the owner & founder of Nicol Floral Design, spring is her “favorite time of year for events.” Nicol loves kicking off the season with her annual gardening ritual, at which time she exchanges her winter florals with fresh spring blooms. She loves seeing her hydrangeas reappear in a delightful array of pale blue and lilac, and she simply loves lounging outside on her patio in the early evenings with friends, family, and a chilled glass of white wine, while soaking in the serene ambience of spring. She enjoys the sweet aroma of spring blossoms and fresh grass, and she especially appreciates the verdant colors of the lush, Pennsylvania suburbs where she currently resides. Nicol also cherishes the significance of spring, as to her, it holds an even deeper meaning—the season in which, twenty-six years ago, she welcomed her first child. However, springtime is as much about creating new memories as it is about treasuring the beautiful moments of our past. Pleasant weather: Spring weather is typically mild and comfortable, with warm days and cool evenings, making it an ideal time for an outdoor wedding. “I think spring is the best time of year to get married,” Nicol says. “The temperature is ideal for outdoor ceremonies as it’s not too cold and it’s not too hot.” For those concerned about spring showers, Nicol believes that “there is nothing more magical than a reception that takes place under a big event tent,” one that allows guests to observe the outdoors, while remaining protected from any unforeseen rainfall. Beautiful scenery: Spring is known for its colorful blooms and vivid greenery, which can create a stunning and unforgettable backdrop for outdoor events. Cherry blossoms, forsythia, and peonies are just a few examples of the many exquisite flowers that are in season during the spring. This natural beauty can enhance the joyful and romantic vibe of any event and create a truly memorable experience. 3. Venue availability: As the weather warms up, many outdoor venues become available for weddings. This includes parks, gardens, and other outdoor spaces that are great for hosting events. These venues often have ample space, allowing event planners to create a unique layout and design for a wedding. “Pennsylvania has so many beautiful and historic venues with gorgeous, well-landscaped grounds, perfect for a wedding reception,” says Nicol. Some of her favorite springtime venues are the Appleford Estate in Villanova, the Loch Aerie Mansion in Malvern, the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park, and the historic Fairmount Water Works in Philadelphia. Our Springtime Spotlight Nicol fondly recalls the awe-inspiring marriage of Lyndsay & Vincent, which took place at the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia and was later featured in the Philadelphia Wedding Magazine. The ceremony was held outside in the picturesque gardens, beside a tranquil pond, and the reception that followed was indoors at a nearby location. The couple chose “Cheyenne” as their floral backdrop, which paired wonderfully with the abundance of fresh white orchids and roses that adorned the sophisticated outdoor venue.
