Monica & Connor exchanged vows at The Willows at Ashcombe Mansion, a new local venue in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania that exceeded their expectations. Built in 1891, the Victorian mansion’s classic architecture provided a picturesque setting for their Gatsby-inspired wedding. • Why Red Flower Wall Proposals are Trending

Create a dreamy proposal with a luxury backdrop of silk red roses. Nicol W. Segel shares expert tips and trendy proposal inspiration. JAKE & EMILY in front of Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Photography by OLIVE EYE PHOTOGRAPHY Our Fairy-tale Take on Proposals Nicol W. Segel, founder and lead designer at Nicol Floral Design, explains why she might just have the best job in the world. “It’s a true privilege to witness so many wonderful love stories unfold,” Nicol says of the many proposals she has been involved in. “Each one is unique and unforgettable.” A wedding proposal is one of the most important moments in a couple’s life. It’s the beginning of a new chapter, and a memory that will be cherished for a lifetime. We know that planning your dream proposal can be daunting, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the pressure of getting everything just right. However, the path to pulling off the perfect proposal should be filled with joy and excitement, too, and with a little planning and preparation, you can create a proposal that is uniquely unforgettable. Nicol Floral Design has some helpful tips! Violinist EUNICE C. CHINA in front of Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Photography by OLIVE EYE PHOTOGRAPHY The first step in planning the perfect proposal is to think about your partner’s preferences. What are their interests and passions? What kind of proposal would they appreciate most? Would they prefer the moment to be private or something more public? Take the time to really consider your partner’s extraordinary personality and their preferences in order to design a proposal that is tailored specially to them. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Photography by ANDREA KROUT The Ideal Backdrop for a Dream Come True Like a ring to a finger, roses and romance are a timeless pairing. Your significant other may not ask for flowers, but you better believe they wish for the romantic gesture! A luxurious floral backdrop shows your spouse-to-be just how far you’re willing to go to sweep them off their feet. At Nicol Floral Design, we believe that there is no better time than engagements and weddings to go that extra mile. Flower walls can be a beautiful and romantic addition to a proposal, not only by setting the mood, but by elevating the aesthetic of this once-in-a-lifetime moment and adding a touch of elegance and glamor. Nicol, who has worked on countless proposals and engagement parties, discusses how the “flower wall proposal trend” took off a couple years ago and has been growing in popularity ever since. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Event Design by BY BIANCA, Photography by FRANCESCA MICHETTI “We can set up anywhere,” says the seasoned designer. “The location of your proposal can make all the difference, whether it’s a restaurant, a venue, or a private home.” Nicol recommends choosing a setting that is meaningful to you and your partner, or a place that you know you will both enjoy. It’s also important to consider the time of day and the predicted weather. If you’re planning an outdoor proposal, be sure to check the forecast and have a backup plan in case of bad weather—even though a cinematic kiss in the rain is undeniably romantic! JAKE & EMILY, and violinist EUNICE C. CHINA in front of Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Photography by OLIVE EYE PHOTOGRAPHY One of Nicol’s favorite proposals took place on a sunshiny day in May, in the exquisite foyer at The Ballroom at Ellis Preserve in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. The event planner, By Bianca, designed all the flower arrangements herself for the occasion, creating a magical yet sophisticated atmosphere. “Incorporating thoughtful and personal touches,” Nicol tells us, “will make a proposal all the more special.” JAKE & EMILY in front of Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Photography by OLIVE EYE PHOTOGRAPHY Nicol suggests that the proposing party begin preparations a few months in advance, so that everyone involved—whether that be family, friends, musicians, or just you—has plenty of time to prepare and make the necessary arrangements. “Planning this special moment two or three months ahead of time also gives the client more freedom and a wider range of dates to choose from when booking rentals,” adds Nicol. Finally, Nicol always recommends having a photographer present to capture the moment. These photos and videos will be treasured memories for years to come. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA” Roses Are Red, Embrace the Trend Just as the films have always told us, flowers are a heartfelt demonstration of true devotion. Red roses, in particular, are an emblem of romance. These iconic and luxurious blooms are often used to convey feelings of passion, desire, and deep love. In addition to their romantic connotations, red roses are also given to express appreciation and gratitude. On the first day of the rest of your lives together, you will without a doubt be feeling every one of these full-hearted emotions. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Event Design by BY BIANCA, Photography by FRANCESCA MICHETTI Nicol Floral Design’s customer favorite and proposal essential, is “Amanda,” an eye-catching scarlet backdrop teeming with hundreds of vibrant red roses. This stunning monochromatic wall has turned heads at many social gatherings, from proposals to holiday events, and even made an appearance on NBC10 News during Tracy Davidson’s “Go Red For Women” campaign. Our proposal expert suggests pairing a color palette of reds and whites with our aesthetic wall of red roses, along with some natural greenery if the proposal is taking place in an outdoor environment. Many clients have chosen to include an attractive red runner leading up to the wall and a personalized sign over the floral panels, as well. There are countless ways to propose, so get creative! She had the opportunity to work alongside talented event planner Petals Lane, who “did a wonderful job decorating.” Together, Nicol Floral Design and Petals Lane created the warm and romantic atmosphere of this couple’s dreams. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Event Design by PETALS LANE “A lot of thought went into the groom’s plans for the proposal,” Nicol recalls. “He was very specific about what he wanted, and that made the [resulting] occasion even more special.” Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Event Design by PETALS LANE At this awe-inspiring October proposal, a hundred candles were placed on either side of the aisle, which was blanketed in a classic red runner and sprinkled with fresh rose petals. Nicol Floral Design’s red flower wall, “Amanda,” was the focal point of the setup. A custom neon sign with the phrase “Love You to the Moon and Back,” was hung from the wall of red roses, and the happy couple’s friends and family hid excitedly behind the wall as the delighted bride-to-be entered, dressed in a stylish, white evening gown. Delicious cocktails and tears of joy followed the breathtaking proposal. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Event Design by PETALS LANE This flawless event was a milestone in their love story and the very beginning of a romance for the ages. For Nicol Floral Design, it was an absolute honor playing a part in that. Planning the perfect proposal takes time and effort, but the results are well worth it. In order to maximize an event planner’s chosen color palette, Nicol suggests adding floral arrangements and additional decor to accentuate the atmosphere. • Why Flower Walls Are Perfect for Kids’ Parties

Celebrate your child's birthday with floral walls handcrafted by designer Nicol. Discover how Nicol balances artistry and motherhood. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “BELLA,” Photography by RACHEL McGINN A Mother’s Creative Power “Parents don’t always have control over [the outcome of] their child’s dreams,” says Nicol W. Segel of Nicol Floral Design, “but there are [a handful of precious] moments in life where we get the opportunity to turn our child’s wildest fairytale into their reality.” Nicol Floral Design founder NICOL W. SEGEL in front of flower wall “CHLOE,” Photography by MADDIE KULIG Nicol reminisces about the November birthday parties that her own mother would host each year at their home in Cataluña, Spain. Nicol vividly remembers the birthday cakes that her mother baked for her and the inventive games they played among friends. “We would mold flour into the shape of a cake and place a candy on top,” Nicol fondly recollects one game. “Each child would cut a slice of the [pretend] cake, and if the candy fell, the person responsible had to [fish the sweet] out using only their nose and mouth.” Nicol also recalls the disco-themed birthday parties she had as a teenager, how she and her friends danced in the banquet room of the beachside hotels where her mother worked as a manager. The designer’s childhood birthdays, no matter how simple, are joyous memories that she has held onto for decades, and will continue to retain for decades to come. It was Nicol’s wish to someday mesh fun games and delicious food with her own original ideas to celebrate her children’s birthdays. Indeed, as the years passed, she achieved that to perfection. Founder & Lead Designer NICOL W. SEGEL, Photography by RACHEL McGINN Nicol Floral Design’s prolific founder has loved entertaining for as long as she can remember, and at a time when her three children were her full-time job, their awe-inspiring birthday parties were how she first explored her craft. From pulling an all-nighter inflating one hundred ride-on sharks for a pirate-themed pool party, to clipping the hydrangeas in her own garden for fresh, personalized floral arrangements, when it comes to her children, there is no bridge Nicol will not cross to see them smile. Evidently, the parties that the resourceful designer once hosted were functions that both her guests and her children would not soon forget. Founder & Lead Designer NICOL W. SEGEL, Photography by RACHEL McGINN A Fun & Flowery Approach to Birthdays Flowers are most commonly used as representations of love, friendship, and joy, so what better element to include as a backdrop for your child’s special day? Nicol specializes in dressing up events for all ages, from newborn photoshoots to sweet sixteens, her couture silk flower walls can fit in flawlessly at any gathering. Lively children’s parties, however, are her absolute favorite because they remind her of when her own kids were young. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “CAROLINA,” Photography by YVONNE LIN CHANG “If only flower walls had been an option back when I [was hosting] my children’s parties,” Nicol says, “I certainly would have included them.” The aspiring designer was always hunting for creative ways to utilize florals at her parties, so much so that she became inspired to create floral structures of her own. It is Nicol’s belief that florals enhance a child’s birthday experience by “transforming and filling a space with color and life.” Her silk flower walls are meant to “transport the children to an impossible location.” Nicol Floral Design flower wall “BELLA,” Photography by ANGELINA M. PHOTOGRAPHY Nicol Floral Design flower wall “CHEYENNE,” Photography by RACHEL McGINN When a venue is indoors, these ethereal florals bring nature to you, with the added advantage of not having to deal with unpredictable weather conditions. “Flower walls control and contain an environment,” Nicol explains, “which is important when you’ve got a lot of little ones running around.” Nicol Floral Design was proudly at the forefront of the birthday flower wall trend, which rose to popularity around seven years ago in the Philadelphia and Delaware County areas. The founder’s originality has since paved the way for countless other designers and event planners who followed suit and are now incorporating flower walls at children’s parties throughout the region. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “NATALIE,” Photography by RACHEL McGINN The Parents’ Guide to a Memorable Party “I want guests to have the time of their lives,” says Nicol. “That’s why I got into the event business—because I love creating [a memorable experience].” Photography by RACHEL McGINN Photography by MADDIE KULIG Bounce houses, ball pits, ice cream trucks, pony rides, face painting, pools, and slippery slides… at children’s parties, the sky’s the limit. A child’s birthday party is a bittersweet occasion for mothers and fathers, because though every parent wants to celebrate their child on their birthday, no parent wants their child to grow up. While a parent may not be capable of halting time, surely, they can create a memory that will last in their loved ones’ minds and hearts forever. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “BELLA,” Photography by RACHEL McGINN “Birthday parties, especially children's parties, are very personal,” the designer explains. For instance, one of her kids went through a Lion King phase, which became the theme of their upcoming party. “Their interests change over time,” says Nicol. “And as parents, we have to keep up [with those changes].” Some little ones enjoy tea parties, some love pirates, or horses, or dinosaurs, and so forth. “They love playing a part in the world that you create for them,” Nicol says, comparing the festive occasion to Halloween. “It’s a theatrical moment for the kids.” Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Photography by KSENIYA BERSON Nicol thinks back to her most favorite birthday celebration that she hosted as a new mom. “It was a colorful, Teletubbies-themed party for my oldest daughter’s second birthday,” she recalls. “There were pony rides, a kids’ DJ, and performers dressed as the Teletubbies.” When asked what she found made her guests the happiest at the parties she threw, Nicol says that while the bounce house was always a major hit, it was the ice cream truck that “people went [the most] wild for—both the kids and adults loved it.” In the summertime, Nicol typically had a barbecue and a large buffet with a salad bar. “Guests loved the display,” she remarks, “and they were grateful for the wide range of options.” Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Balloons by PEONIES EVENTS, Photography by KSENIYA BERSON For parents seeking recommendations, Nicol suggests hiring an event planner for your child’s birthday party. “Event planners bring all the best vendors together and make the process as stress-free as possible,” she explains. For hosts on a budget, Nicol knows of plenty of affordable event planners. When it comes to choosing a memorable theme, some classics that will never go out of style are the Disney princesses, Toy Story, Moana, Frozen, and—a more recent trend—Encanto. Nicol Floral Designs’s striking, red flower wall, “Amanda,” was recently the centerpiece of a carnival-themed birthday bash that Nicol described as “original and well executed.” One of Nicol’s favorite venues for a kids’ birthday party is the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, as the location is literally built for children. Above all, the seasoned designer recommends hosting children’s parties at private homes because this is usually the least overwhelming option for parents needing to keep eyes on so many young party-goers. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “AMANDA,” Photography by KSENIYA BERSON Choosing the Best Flower Wall for Your Child For every idyllic venue, magical theme, and special child, there’s an enchanting flower wall. At children’s parties, Nicol Floral Design’s expertly-crafted silk walls are typically used as backdrops for the photo booth, the birthday cake display, and the gift table. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “NAOMI,” Photography by FRANCESCA MICHETTI The flower walls currently trending at children’s parties are “Bella,”, “Naomi,” “Amanda,” “Carolina,” and “Kaia.” Nicol explains that “Bella,” a blissful-pink flower wall, is her most popular rental for the occasion, and often the choice for young girls’ parties. An exciting trend that Nicol has seen a lot of lately is tropical and safari-themed parties that gravitate towards her lush, green flower wall, “Kaia.” For Frozen parties, Nicol recommends “Carolina,” a vibrant, blue flower wall. Nicol suggests decorating the area around the flower wall with color-coordinated balloons and other props. Some creative additions that the floral designer has seen at birthday celebrations recently are large dinosaur statues, stuffed-animal party favors, Disney character cutouts, and even live animals at a safari-themed party. Deconstructing the wall afterwards and removing it from the venue takes approximately fifteen to twenty minutes. SEGEL, Photography by MADDIE KULIG “She’s a brilliant event planner,” says Skyla, age 24, of her mother. “Everyone can always count on her to have a plan.” Skyla remembers the colorful “polka-dot cake and the one hundred inflatable balls in the pool” at her tropical island-themed birthday party. “[Nicol] executed everything to perfection every single time without fail.” Nicol Floral Design flower wall “BELLA,” Photography by MADDIE KULIG “She was resolutely committed to our happiness,” says Xavi, age 23, as he recalls a birthday party of his own. “It was wonderful,” Nicol’s youngest child remarks. “There was a lot of structure to the planning process. There was never anything to prove or to be gained; it was simply about the kids having a truly special experience that we would remember for the rest of our lives.” Just as her mother before her, Nicol set an example—one that, no doubt, her three children will someday reinvent as their own. • 5 Flowers Essential to Fall Weddings

The expert's guide to a flawless fall wedding unveils historic venues, flower walls, and the perfect fall color palette for your wedding day. PHOTOGTAPHY An Inspiring & Nostalgic Landscape Nicol was first captivated by this aesthetic time of year as a young adult during her first-ever visit to the United States. She remembers departing her sunny, coastal town in Spain and touching down in the leaf-strewn suburbs of Philadelphia to an extraordinary palette of oranges, reds, and golds. Nicol describes the experience as “magical” and knew at that moment that Pennsylvania was where she was meant to settle down. Fall, named in the United States for the falling leaves, is not only the season of pumpkin spice and spooky costumes, but more-so a period of glorious transformation. As the leaves change from green to gold and as the warm air turns delightfully crisp, the bountiful fall really is such a romantic and fitting time for those in love to move on to that exciting new chapter of their lives. Segel has been involved in countless fall celebrations over the years. From an October wedding at an old Pennsylvania mansion, to a Gatsby-themed event at the Rodin Museum, there are some events that will forever be etched in the seasoned designer’s memory. When it comes to venues, Nicol has always been most enamored with historical sites, of which, thankfully, there is no shortage in the northeast. Nicol especially loves events that commemorate a location’s unique history. One of her all-time favorite venues for a fall wedding is the dreamy Cairnwood Estate, a historic banquet hall in Bryn Athyn, where on October 22nd of last year, Samantha & Spencer tied the knot. Nicol recalls how “the bridesmaids wore stunning dresses of rust-colored velvet,” a tribute to the picturesque season. On display at the reception, which was featured in Philadelphia Style, were three of Nicol Floral Design’s “June” flower wall backdrops, compositions of delicate creams that partnered idyllically with the bride’s seasonal color palette as it provided a touch of polished simplicity to the lavish atmosphere. “One wall [was positioned] behind the “sweetheart table,” one was displayed in the seating area, and a third wall was used as a photo booth backdrop,” explains Nicol. Nicol occasionally incorporates fruits and berries in her fall-inspired flowers walls, along with succulents and other greenery for a pop of color. While her attractive, seasonal walls are often monochromatic, they are expertly composed of many different flowers. For instance, various types of pale roses and hydrangeas, and white berries. For a fall wedding, the designer usually recommends a neutral palette of “soft colors, [such as] creams and whites, pale blush, dusty rose, taupe, mauve, lilac, and dove gray.” While Nicol loves an extravagant reception, she has a soft spot for simple spaces where florists can be creative, and, in Nicol’s words, “make a blank canvas their own.” Nicol Floral Design flower wall “EMILY,” Photography by COURTNEY SIMPSON Our Lead Floral Designer’s Top Picks for Fall Nothing embodies romance like the Rose, so it comes as no surprise that Nicol Floral Design’s founder has named this timeless flower her top choice for a fall wedding essential. According to Nicol, roses are a “key aspect” of her silk flower walls because these enchanting flowers pair superbly with any other and are exquisite when placed front and center, no matter the time of year. White Hydrangeas can be expected in most of Nicol’s work, as these elegant blooms, like the rose, contribute to a harmonious blend year-round. Hydrangeas, native to Asia and the Americas, are delicate and versatile. It is for these reasons that the hydrangea is Nicol’s favorite flower to display in her own home during the fall season. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “EMILY,” Photography by FRANCESCA MICHETTI The third flower that Nicol has chosen as her fall favorite is the ornamental Ranunculus, a vibrant, rose-like flower that Nicol uses subtly in her pieces, usually alongside the rose and the hydrangea. Also known as the Persian buttercup, Nicol prefers to use both white and peach-colored ranunculus at this festive time of year. Blue Echinops, or Globe Thistles, are another Nicol Floral Design essential that prove to be an excellent detail when displayed at fall weddings. These lovely perennials have an aesthetic spherical shape and, though Nicol does not use silk globe thistles religiously in her floral walls, she enjoys including dried echinops in fall arrangements at home. Nicol’s final favorite is the rose-colored Dahlia. Native to Central America, these luxuriant blooms can be found in many colors and make the most gorgeous and bushy bouquets. Nicol explains that her inspiration behind this flower wall was autumn itself and that, unlike some of her other walls, “Emily” she created specifically for this scenic time of year. While our silk floral walls “Gabriella” and “June” continue to be extremely popular during the fall wedding season, they are meant to fit in effortlessly at ceremonies year-round. Nicol Floral Design flower wall “EMILY,” Photography by FRANCESCA MICHETTI Nicol spent the past summer perfecting “Emily” for the fall season and is excited for her new piece to debut at upcoming events. “Emily” showcases many of Nicol’s seasonal favorites, such as pink and mauve roses, white hydrangeas, and ivory ranunculus. Nicol added a festive touch of snow-white berries and sage-colored eucalyptus to her newest design.
